Matt Hewll: Emo Defender?

Description

The first (and most likely only) Matt Hewll strip, a character designed entirely a college project. The whole thing was just an excuse for me to blatantly take elements from early Jamie Hewlett art (like Hewligans Haircut and Tank Girl) and D'Israeli's work on Lazarus Churchyard. On top of that I just coated the character in references from the design sheets to the finished strip.

Also, this strip has one major point to make (apart from the obvious "fookin' emo's!" thing). Fact is, everyone has a predujice at some level. I'm not justifying that point, I wish people didn't and that I was a better person and did'nt either. But I'm not and do (personally I can't stand ignorance on any level - there's no excuse not to learn if you have the faculties avaliable).

Not liking something or someone because it's a groups view for you to latch onto is bang out of order as is spewing senseless bile at them just for being there at the wrong place and time. If you're going to hate something be substantial in your reasons why and hopefully come to form those opinions on your own.

I could list all the problems I have with most youth subcultures but that'd be a fucking chore to read, a mind numbing bore fest and also filling up the internet with more shit you don't need. So I drew this strip to poke fun at (one of) them instead.

Culture refs:

Panic! At The Dinner Table, My Chemical Prolapse and A Fart Inside are all emo band names spoofed.

23 - The magic number.

Shit Kid T-Shirt - Infamous Senseless Things T-shirt spoofing the Mega City Four: Pop Kid t-shirts.

TSW badge - TwoSidesWide, british web comic rock and roll.
