Description

While working on the pages for Metronaut I was reminded by the organisers of Melksham Comic-Con [link] via email that the deadline was looming to get my goodie bag offering's sorted out for this years show. The basic deal being that you can pay to have your stuff chucked in to so many odd goodie bags that get handed out to visitors when they enter. It's a nice idea and a good promotion opportunity.

So I decided to do a postcard of Metronaut. Partly cos that's the comic I'm working on right now, partly cos I wanted to do a colour piece and also because I haven't really done a postcard design before.

I do colour work so rarely and 100% marker based colour jobs even less so I was really chuffed I got the levels I wanted straight away once I'd scanned it. It prints off fairly well on my home printer but that's not really a good measure of how the finished piece will look as every printer has its differences after all.

The pose is somewhat off as he's leaning ever so slightly inwards to his left side (or "it" as Metronaut has no head and is therefore neither totally a he, she or human - machine?) but that's the down side of trusting too heavily in photo referencing. The pose was inspired by an old poster for Patlabor 2 [link] (see the centre figure of the character Noa). The colour scheme and outfit is from Kill Bill which in turn was from Bruce Lee in Game of Death. There's a chest patch with C&C on which is the logo for Cape & Cowl comics in Derby. The helmet is inspired by a model based on fighter pilot helmets that Diesel produce for motorcyclists.
